Stories From Adults:
"Until recently, I could only view the world
using the information from one eye at a time. I had absolutely no
depth perception. My view of the world was a narrow 2D picture.
After
4 months of vision therapy, I had a major break through I saw the
world in 3D for the first time in my life. At first, I could not
understand what I was seeing. It had to be explained to me, that
there is space between everything. And all of a sudden, everything
started popping out at me. It stunned me how different everything
looked. I was feeling things with my eyes for the fist time. I could
tell the thickness, texture, and shape of things just by looking
at them. For the first time ever, there was depth to a room and
everything was in its own place. The lights seemed brighter, but
no longer bothered my eyes. And colors were much more striking especially
red and pink. It was such an incredibly amazing experience that
I cried tears of joy.
I feel
as though I have just joined the world, instead of looking at a
flat world, I am now looking into a new and exciting one! I used
to feel like I was invisible because I was only observing the world
and not truly experiencing it. It’s easier to talk to people
now because I can connect with them by understanding and seeing
what they have all along. I feel so thankful for my new 3D world!
Vision therapy has truly given me a whole new perspective on life!!"

"I
started vision therapy in February 2002. At that time I was wearing
my glasses most of the time. And that was after Lasik surgery! I
went to Dr. Eskew for contact lenses. After examining my eyes, Dr.
Eskew thought I was a good candidate for vision therapy. I was a
little skeptical at first. I soon came to trust Rachel, my motivating
vision therapist. Rachel thoroughly explained the theory behind
the exercises I was doing. It all made sense when I started to see
progress in my vision. Now, it’s November 2002, and I only
wear glasses to drive and see a movie at the theater. Thanks a million
Rachel and Dr. Eskew!"

"Before
I began vision therapy, I hand no idea it even existed. All I knew
was that I hated school, was a poor reader, had terrible rhythm,
often got head aches at work, wasn’t very good at sports.
When Dr. Lewis first examined my eyes, I felt like for the first
time in my life I had an answer to why I’d struggled thought
so many things throughout my life. In the past, I had sensed that
something was wrong, but what? Now I knew that there was a problem,
and it could be “fixed”. I was ready to work through
this problem, because in my heart I knew that my life would become
easier to live.
To
go back and recap all that has happened would be difficult to do
because so much has changed. Most of the changes have been subtle
although a few have been more obvious.
I believe
the biggest change that happened was on the inside. I’m much
more confident in everything I do simply because I can now actually
see what I’m doing! I had the eye movements of a five year
old and my reading comprehension was around the sixth grade level.
Now, for a twenty-four year old guy, that wasn’t what I really
wanted to hear. I had very little control of my eyes. When reading,
my eyes were very erratic and jerky, jumping all over the page.
Having now been through the therapy, my eyes move smoothly and are
controlled. And I also comprehend what I’m reading!
Other
changes that took place are that I now am able to keep rhythm whereas
before I didn’t have rhythm. My handwriting is now much smoother
and neater and more controlled. I am able to see fast moving things
with little effort (this is especially true in playing most sports).
I can now glimpse something and still “see” it in my
mind’s eye. My ability to do math has improved dramatically.
Over all, I’m much more relaxed simply by the fact that my
eyes are working much more efficiently.
For
me, vision therapy was not just an easy walk in the park. It was
difficult, time consuming, and even frustrating at times. For five
months, I spent a good hour or more a day doing the exercises for
that week. I poured my whole self into this because I was the only
one who could determine what the outcome of the process would be.
I was told from the beginning that I would get out of vision therapy
only what I was willing to put into it. This wasn’t a magical
potion that would suddenly transform my eyes; I would have to work
hard. And I did work hard. And now I do have eyes that work the
way they were created to work.
In
the end, if I could go back to change anything, I would change my
age. If I had been able to go through vision therapy at a much younger
age, my life would have been much easier. I would have enjoyed school,
played better in sports, read many more books, and would’ve
had more confidence in learning new things. But I am truly grateful
that I went through this life changing process."
